Third Avenue Playhouse produces theatre for theatre’s sake. TAP is in the
unique and enviable position of being able to offer exciting, adventurous
works that larger theatres can rarely (if ever) consider producing. These
lesser-known works from recognizable playwrights, along with the work of
exciting new and emerging writers, all find a home on TAP’s stage.
The intimacy of the performance space provides a safe, human-scale
setting; an invitation to explore worthy but hard questions about what
makes us human — hopefully engendering compassion, curiosity, and a
deeper commitment to and awareness of, our larger community.
TAP is well suited to provide these opportunities for both the actors and the
audience to experience. The best actors seek out challenging roles that
require courage and resilience; and they are drawn to TAP simply for the
chance to challenge themselves.
The obstacle is that TAP’s facilities are woefully inadequate for professional
actors. There is no dedicated rehearsal space. The dressing rooms are little
more than a landing area at the top of a flight of stairs, with no bathrooms,
no showers, and little lighting. There is no dedicated rehearsal space or
green room.
The actors’ willingness to endure these conditions thus far is due only to the
high quality artistic opportunities TAP provides.
The REIMAGINE Campaign will enable TAP to build upon its
reputation for excellence by expanding the range of artistic
possibilities giving both actors and audiences even greater
theatrical experiences.
